Happy Independence Day!
to the American folk. On the Wright Stuff today they had some amazing statistics (but didn't list the source of the figures).

In 1776 after Independence there was 2.5 million Americans living in the US and now there is just under 300million! But also in 1776 there was 1.5 million Native Americans and now there is just 43,000!

I did American Independence in history and was always intrigued by the Boston Tea Party! I don't know what age I did it because for my GCSE's I did America in the 20's and racism in the American south as American modules and all the rest was revolutions in Europe.

I always remember the date of Independence Day cos the film of the same name had the tag on the title "id4" lol! I don't know when Thanksgiving is at all!
Have good bbq's and fireworks!

The Price of Life
After my post yesterday asking about American gas price signs (here) and what the fractions mean and you all kindly told me!

Rich took a photo of a UK petrol station sign for me today....

petrol sign

The UK prices are pence (100pence in a £1) per litre of petrol.
Rich also worked this out right here...

In case anyone's interested.

Using the example of $3.429 / gallon of unleaded as in the picture.

Here in the UK for unleaded it's currently £0.949 / litre or £3.597 / gallon.

Using the current exchange rate from xe.com of £1 = $1.80151

It works out that we pay equivalent to $6.48 / gallon of unleaded.

And to think people in America are complaining!

So we do pay double the American prices for fuel! However its important to point out that every country in the world has high prices for Petrol / Gas at the moment and the UK highly taxes Petrol so that you are supposed to not use it as much and use public transport! (This doesn't really work, as not everyone in the country has a good service and the London transport is so expensive really!). The UK has the highest rate of tax on Petrol in Europe which is currently around 49p per litre

American Help
hi darlings,

I need help from an American not sexually or for my mental health! just yet

On the BBC News tonight they talked about the prices of Petrol / Gas and everyone in America is going insane over the price! (which looking globally is one of the cheapest prices for fuel in the world and is virtually untaxed! American gas is still half the price of most countries! but anyway that is not the point). They showed an American gas station (?) I don't know what you call them, garage (?) and it had a price sign outside it. But I cant work out what it means. It showed the different fuels and was like 398 9/10 - what the fuck does it mean? My family are all arguing about it? The first number I guess is the price per gallon in cents or dollars? But what is the fraction? On the sign they showed on camera all the different fuels were 9/10!

The sooner more cars move away from oil based fuel the better, its so unstable at the moment! If I had a car I want it to run on some sort of reliable alternative fuels! I would also want flowers to be painted on it! I want a eco green hippie fan! It would be like scooby doo!

Cheers if you can explain the American Gas system to me!

the unpopular one in the classroom
I am theming this post! It will all link together I tell you!

o the one with the fantastic quotes but possibly one of the worlds worst politicians Donald Rumsfield has been attacked for being crap. (news story). Bush has spoken out and supported him and given him his "full support". I have a rule of thumb and that is, in any government in the world if the leader gives someone their full support amid scandal of some form, they always have about max 6 months left in that job! Try it out in your own home, it always works! Support by the head is always the death nail in the coffin! The only exception to this rule (or maybe more of a personal theory of mine) is Ruth Kelly who is still in there after scandal and support from Blair! I guess 6 months after the event is not up yet so she is not a proven exception yet! I partially like in this story the fact that Bush described him as "energetic and steady" when talking about his leadership! (one of my fave ever news clips is when Donald is abroad in a military base doing a talk and a soldier/marine type person asks a really difficult question about why they have no right equipment there! brilliant! Its almost as good as the housewife arguing with Margaret Thatcher live on tv by phone in the 80's!

o apparently everyone hates America (in the UK) (news story). An American women who lives in the UK is complaining about the fact there is so much racism and anti-American feeling (that she has experienced) in the UK. She says she gets abuse and taunts when people hear her accent and is criticised for supporting Bush as president and the war. The lady did not support the war or Bush or vote for him. I cannot support hatred for anyone! You can't judge someone for an entire country! Even if someone voted for Bush and has totally different beliefs to you, you cannot hold that against them and persecute them! If you are against America and the war so much than more people should have voted against Tony Blair to get him removed from power. That is not as easy as it sounds because there was not that much choice really in the last general election, but if you feel strongly about it there should have been more protest votes. I think there is a lot of anti war feeling and anti American feeling. Whilst I cannot condone abuse to anyone (and if people keep being nasty to American's we will lose tourism from there! although after 9/11 we have not that many American tourists anyway) and I don't think you can scapegoat one American you meet, no mater if they agree with you or not! But I do think that America now has a huge image problem, with citizens getting abuse around the world and the political leaders cannot travel anyway without protests and marches against them and that is of their own doing! Their policies have made them unpopular but don't blame individual people for it! I like the BBC News 'have your say' sections and there is some good comments from both sides on that page.

o everyone hates Raymond - actually I hate Raymond I can't stand that show and I can't get into everybody hates Chris! I may have posted this bit to continue the theme of the post ;)

expelled gay student
I was just going to bed and saw this story from Google News - story link

A 20 year old student at a Kentucky small baptist university was expelled this week because he wrote on his myspace profile that his sexuality was 'gay'! (btw I like in the new story they use the term "dismissed" which sounds far lighter than "expelled" or "thrown out of").

The university has a policy in which it claims that it reserves the right to expel a student who "promotes sexual behaviour not consistent with Christian principles."
and that its unapologetic about its Christian beliefs.

So let me get this straight they have thrown out a student who wrote he was gay online. He may never had had gay sex and I am sure other students there do just as un consistent Christian things.

I can't believe they have the right to do that. That would never happen in the UK (I hope!). If you are fired from your job for being gay and lesbian then you sure hear about it with a huge lawsuit. Its unfair dismissal. How is this any different? If I was the family of the boy or is that 'young adult' I would seek legal advice. Then again if I had children there is no way in a million years I would send them to a religious school or university which promotes hatred and un scientific teachings.

Moral of the story is be careful about what you write about yourself online! I am always worried that someone will find out I am gay from the net! lol But these days I just think I will just say oh yeah, did you not realise?
I remember that the fabulous [info]mangojellytoast wrote something criticising her school and a teacher on livejournal and it was seen and she got in major trouble over it. Then again why should someone have to hide who they are online, sometimes its a great place to get support and meet other people who are similar to yourself!

RIP Nana Mary
One of my personal New Year's resolutions this year was to more regularly update my journal, and seeing as how this is my first post of 2006, I have sadly failed that already!

I was sad to hear yesterday that Shelley Winters had died (news story). I will always remember her as Nana Mary in Roseanne and in the Poseidon Adventure and she was so great! She won multiple Oscars and was a true Hollywood icon! There is a wonderful obituary of her over here. I have never seen the film of the Diary of Anne Frank with her, but must now! She did well for having a wonderful career and dying at the age of 85! The Poseidon Adventure is still one of my fave ever films and in May 2004 it was voted the favourite disaster movie of all time in a survey. (survey results here)

There is some American old TV shows which were over years ago but I love to watch! I still watch most of them on various channels daily and they show all the episodes and then go back to the start and then cycle again and I can never see them enough! I still really love Roseanne, Ellen and the Golden Girls! They were all so brilliant! I don't think there has really been a massively successful sitcom in such a way since Friends.

I will miss Shelley! :(
And I will update my livejournal more! Coming up next my review of my Christmas and New Year in 6 pictures or less!

The Mexican Terrorist and other Redneck stories
Christmas is starting to drive me insane! Hope you are ready for Christmas if you celebrate it?

Last night on the BBC News at 10' o clock there was an article about the US / Mexican border and immigration. But they had the most wonderful ever footage of rednecks talking about it! First of all they went in a helicopter patrolling the border and they found some immigrants running and the pilot was asked some questions and he said they were terrorists invading his country. wtf? The guy really needs to look up "terrorist" in the dictionary. I don't believe that the Mexicans are bombing or attacking or making a political point about an issue. Another police guy talked to was going on and on about how his grandma is hassled when she goes through airports and has her bag searched and yet the immigrants don't get searched or have their bags searched! That just seems like sour grapes!

They had these "unofficial" guys who are retired who patrol places at night and are all armed!

Mexican migrants do all the crappy low paid jobs that Americans don't want to do. I honestly don't believe that a huge wall is going to put up in an Israel type way. American needs some of those Mexican migrants and also needs the Mexican govt on their side as they have helped them with finding criminals and various people crossing the line in the past!

Someone else wrote this about the article on the news, from a newsgroup..

there was an item on the News tonight showing US attempts to stop migrants crossing the border from Mexico in to the U.S.A. .Matt Frei was in a Blackhawk helicopter and they were searching for "walkers" as they described them . ... The word "terrorist" got mentioned .I cant remember the exact words used but the pilot seemed to suggest that they were terrorists and Matt Frei questioned what he had said and the reply was " Well, they terrorise me " ....FFS .What a load of shit ...

from this newsgroup posting here

The actual news story it was about is here although does not have any video or any of the interviews with the white trash

Everyday I read something or see something else about America which just makes me sigh! I don't think its every going to change, and it has the worst international image anyway, except maybe apart from like North Korea. They have managed to piss off people in most countries all around the world. I considered this year boycotting anything American. Due to the environmental and international policies e.g, pollution, and support of Israel. I don't think I could give up American tv though! I mean most electronics etc is all made in Asian with American brand names, but I wonder could the future hold people boycotting? American needs the international trade, especially as the dollar is sinking! I honestly don't think the future is bright for the USA whoever is in power and that is going to affect any country who is associated with America too :(

The people who are not religious and / or right wing extremists, or part of a political lobby or can read are lovely, that I have known or met online! Yet people seem to be in a brain washed cloud, where when people leave the States, they suddenly have realisations, yet why cant people see it there? we are supposed to be giving the American way of democracy to Iraq? I don't think we will ever pull out!

Sorry this post is not very humorous or optimistic :(

[LJ2ME] World's Apart
[info]inlogan told me on his LJ about a new java livejournal client for my phone! Before I always posted by email or wap posting before!

I always wonder every year - why is the Baseball final thingy called 'the world series?' Surely its legally arguable that you need to include several other countries? Is Canada included? Can't they call it 'the grand final' or something? :)

Hot Cakes
Adding to my last post that was here about losing my Krispy Kreme virginity for the first time, I found an article free on google from Time (Europe version) magazine about it.

Its right here - Selling Like Hot Cakes

Its basically about Krispy Kreme and Dunkin' Doughnuts are spreading to a worldwide presence. Dunkin' is actually owned by a UK drinks company called Allied Domecq. After launching in the UK they have made losses in Europe and recently closed their last UK store. Where as Krispy Kreme is flying off the shelves here!

[info]devoiddroid found this article on the bbc news site about the launch of KK in the UK and Europe!

I will find out if the doughnuts from KK my brother brought were fresh or already boxed. There is a photo on that article of a huge factory making them and I guess its all pre made, but then most fast food is just made in a factory, transported and then re-heated! Its why it all looks the same and tastes the same. I still want the taste of that Krispy Kreme again :)

The sweet taste of nectar
On Friday I had the sweet taste of nectar, the experience of almost ambrosia from the gods. Yes my brother brought some Krispy Kreme doughnuts and brought some home from me.

Apart from the huge American retail brands that are internationally known like McDonald's, Burger King, KFC, and Starbucks, there are some that are just appearing in Europe and in the UK. There is quite a few Subway sandwich shops now and even have adverts on the TV and radio. There is one in my local town, I do like their 12 inches in my mouth *snicker*. Brands that are just coming over gradually are Dunkin' Doughnuts and Krispy Kreme. Quite often when shops and brands come over to the UK they start selling in Harrods. The first Krispy Kreme shop opened about a year ago there but now they are spreading out.

He brought 12 of them to share out at work and around. I know they are evil and really unhealthy but oh my god they taste so good. I had 2 and wanted more, more! My brother has had them before but I have never tasted them before but knew of the brand from my American friends and TV and film.

My brother said to me sweetly afterwards that he limits himself to 2 and wont have any more! I swear I could have just kept eating them till I exploded. They are like the crack of food.

Maybe they get you addicted so you have to buy more and more!

So in conclusion I like Krispy Kreme. Now to find a Dunkin' Doughnuts to try! :)
