The Price of Life
After my post yesterday asking about American gas price signs (here) and what the fractions mean and you all kindly told me!

Rich took a photo of a UK petrol station sign for me today....

petrol sign

The UK prices are pence (100pence in a £1) per litre of petrol.
Rich also worked this out right here...

In case anyone's interested.

Using the example of $3.429 / gallon of unleaded as in the picture.

Here in the UK for unleaded it's currently £0.949 / litre or £3.597 / gallon.

Using the current exchange rate from xe.com of £1 = $1.80151

It works out that we pay equivalent to $6.48 / gallon of unleaded.

And to think people in America are complaining!

So we do pay double the American prices for fuel! However its important to point out that every country in the world has high prices for Petrol / Gas at the moment and the UK highly taxes Petrol so that you are supposed to not use it as much and use public transport! (This doesn't really work, as not everyone in the country has a good service and the London transport is so expensive really!). The UK has the highest rate of tax on Petrol in Europe which is currently around 49p per litre

I know from my American friends that they have to drive everywhere but its a really different culture where everyone gets a car and learns to drive about 16 years old till about 18, and everyone is driving! Here I don't know that many people who can drive under 21! You can learn at 17, but its so expensive per lesson and for the driving tests, plus they are really tough. There is a practical test in the car and a written multiple choice test!

My American buddies are always amazed that I cannot drive! There is quite a few people who cannot drive here and maybe they don't need to for their lives!

How are you doing? I miss your journal and you got rid of all your cute lj icons ;)

I was driving when i was 13, sitting on a pillow driving the truck around the farm.

Yea i have a bf that i've been seeing for like 2 years... so i don't really have much to rant and rave about. and the icon was when i was young and twinkish... so that went too...

Gas is cheap compared to nearly the rest of the world...even 15 years ago when i was in Germany it was DM1.25 which works out to about 4 bucks a gallon (thats when gas was $1.25 a gallon in the states)

The gas prices do not bother me that much...its 4 bucks to fill the scooters...and they get 100 mpg (but i keep the monster truck parked)

about your last post...because of my mothers disabilities...i got my drivers license at 15 years old...i could have gotten it at 14 if i pushed...and drivers education was 160 dollars...and i got a high school credit for it...LOL

Americans generally have to travel around a lot mor by road though, there simply isn't the options for public transport that we have over here.

yes, we are complaining, because petrol has more than doubled in the last year - throwing everyone's budget into chaos. while the UK was already accustomed to higher prices due to taxation. but thankfully for you, oil is still traded in US Dollars, and as the dollar has lost value, the UK really hasn't seen the price jumps like we have.

what if in 6 months, the UK price went from .949/litre to 1.889/litre? that's what we're going through now.

here it causing wicked inflation - but the boys in washington factor out the inflation due to petrol costs so it doesn't look as bad. but everything is going skyhigh, food, clothing, you name it.
